Draft Dragon Adventure Writing Workshop:  students go on a quest to find a dragon

Rationale: Inquiry using interactive fiction text based role-playing game, students form team of heroes to get the dragon. Immersion is enhanced by teambuilding games, puzzles, apps and aurasma to promote creative writing outcomes in Yr 8 students. Add QR codes or Aurasma for riddles.  Use Epic Citadel or Castlerama for setting.

Time– 2 days

Draft Plan Students need paper and pen. Students are to map their journey. Need an internet enabled device for each team to play the game. Download game and play from blb files. Zip files are at: 

Character Using Dragon Adventure IF game, teachers set the context.  Read introduction from

Put students in teams, bandannas/shirts.

Play from Harry Potter. First part – considers need to use logic. Then discuss feeling overwhelmed by challenge and concept of adventure. From The Hobbit: and

Discussion in groups – why are they chosen for this adventure? Brainstorm reasons.

Do 5 mins writing focusing on character and teamwork.

Students script dialogue. How do they feel about being chosen? Then pick one student’s work to act script for group to dramatise. Do character scaffolds and sketches:

Setting Use Epic Citadel, Castelrama and /or similar resources.

Do 5 mins writing on setting. Build word wall. Metaphor and simile work.

Students grab screen shots of setting.

Teambuilding 1 It is dark. The team has to cross the swamp.

Students will play the minefield game

Or the Maze game  Half an hour. See how many get cross swamp in time.

Do 5 mins writing

Do reflection on team skills especially listening and conflict resolution, how to improve team role. Effect of role and character in the game.

Do truth lie puzzle. )Use aurasma or qr codes for puzzles)

Introduce Dragon Adventure IF game: have to load files on device for each group. Good idea to do first part as whole group to show how to use commands, how to map, how to create decision diagram. Then students work as team of 4 to progress through the game for 15 mins.

Do 5 mins writing in response to adventure.


Teambuilding 2 The team has to cross a raging river. Play Hot Chocolate River for half an hour.

Reflect on strategies being used, teamwork.

Do 5 mins writing

Do brainteaser riddle

Continue the Dragon Adventure IF game 15 mins.


Teambuilding 3 The team is under attack by dragons. Play Dodgeball Goliath for 15 mins. Tie how long Goliath survives.

Do 5 mins writing

Do sequence riddle

Continue the Dragon Adventure IF game 15 mins.


Finish the game.

Use writing to create a short story about a Dragon Adventure and include map, screenshots and character sketches.

Optional end activity

One of the 2 possible outcomes of the IF game is to free the dragon from the spell. Assume you did this. Fly your dragon.

Train your dragon

Write for 5 mins.

Capture the flag

Students need to get their team to objective unseen. Other teams doing same thing. Take photos of “enemy.” Team who gets to objective first with least photos taken of them wins.
