10. Reading idea – We have this for the first time this year (about 480 students). As part of a whole school literacy program, all classes have reading time for the first 15mins after lunch each day. This time is a mix of quiet reading or shared reading by the teacher. During this 15mins if a student in years 2-7 needs to change their book for home reading or class they can come to the library. I think it is having a positive impact. I have the opportunity to to help the students select the right book for them and it gives those kids who ‘forget’ to come before/after school or at lunch time a chance to select books they want to read. An unexpected plus has been the halving of the overdue notices I have to give out. “The greatest gift is a passion for reading.” Elizabeth Hardwick
Thanks to Sue Busch, Teacher Librarian, Bundaberg North State School for permission to use her ideas from oztlnet.
